Over the past 40+ years, the number of residents in the Third Ward grew from around 300 to over 3,000. The numbers continue to rise as more apartments and condos are built and filled. As the number of residents changed, so too did the type of resident. The neighborhood has changed over the past decade from young professionals and retirees to families – with children; and grandparents with visiting grandchildren.
To address that change, the Historic Third Ward Association is working to develop Gas Light Park at the corner of Jefferson St./Erie St. to provide a playground for young children. The new additions to the park will encompass a United Way Born Learning Trail for fun interactive activities and a small multi-activity playground.
The Born Learning Trail is a United Way project which provides signage and pavement elements for a number of interactive activities for children and their caregivers. Activities encompass physical and mental exercises to foster learning at all levels. And, above all, it is designed to be fun!
The budget for the project is $85,000 and we have raised nearly 75% of our goal. You can help us cross the finish line this year and early 2021. We would love to stay on our schedule for install in Spring of 2021.
